About Us

What makes us different?

Our expertise

Our founder, Oliver Ludlow, has played the bassoon from the age of 10. His passion for bassoons led to the creation of Double Reed. Our bassoon journey started in 2010 with the purchase of 21 bassoons from a county music service. This, together with a graduate new business grant from the Welsh Government, kick-started Double Reed.

From these very small beginnings we have sold hundreds of second-hand bassoons in more than 20 countries, from less than £250 to more than £25,000.

We are wholly dedicated to bassoons. We love their history, individuality and rich sound. We source well-loved bassoons - either purchased or sold on commission - from nearly new to 100 years old; they are restored and upgraded as necessary, and passed on to be loved all over again.

Our attention to detail

It’s the little things that matter: playing each bassoon again and again, checking every pad and key, carefully improving varnish, minutely adjusting the mechanism. Our attention to detail is second to none. Crooks are also important, and we individually partner crooks with bassoons for the perfect sound.

You can be assured that each instrument we sell has been thoroughly assessed and played at every stage. That’s why we can hand it to you with 12 months’ warranty on all bassoons owned by us.

Our passion

Our passion is matching you with the right instrument. Whatever your ability, knowledge or budget, we can help. Each step of the way, we’ll discuss your requirements with you.

You can borrow a bassoon using our Try Before You Buy scheme. Play it in your own home, in your orchestra, and with your teacher. Or come to visit us; you’ll have the time and space to play as many instruments as you like - for as long as you like. Our after-sales care is unrivalled, too, for both Double Reed-owned instruments and commission sale instruments.

Our repairs service

Our expertise, attention to detail and passion extend to repairing your bassoon. We know how valuable your instrument is to you. Our in-house repairs service is highly skilled, meticulous and exact. Please contact us for a free, no obligation quotation.
